Description: | The Scottish cleric and historian Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715) is shown wearing ecclesiastical robes and holding his biretta in his left hand. A book on the table next to him is either the Bible or one of the histories he wrote himself, such as his famous History of my Own Time. After working in Scotland and London, Burnet moved to the United Provinces in 1687, where he entered the service of the Prince of Orange.
