Description: | This portrait of a boy has previously been attributed to an artist of the Scottish School, and has traditionally been identified as Prince Charles Edward Stuart ('Bonnie Prince Charlie'). The portrait is in fact of his father, Prince James Frances Edward Stuart (James III or 'The Old Pretender'), after a now lost portrait by the French court painter Nicolas de Largillière (1656-1746). The young prince is shown with long hair and wearing a lace-trimmed shift and a blue mantle, the latter held up by a jewelled chain. The overall visual effect is of informality and grandeur, befitting the rules of the display of undress in relation to status. | Subjects: | portrait (Prince James Frances Edward Stuart) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Largillière, Nicolas de (French painter and draftsman, 1656-1746) Æ Attributed to after | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8581... | Go to resource |
