Description: | Signed: yes Description: The archangel Raphael and Tobias, holding a fish, are depicted in an Italianate landscape. The scene relates to an incident that occurred during Tobias' journey from Nineveh to Media: while washing on the shore of a river, Tobias was attacked by a large fish. On the angel's instructions, Tobias pulled it on to land, killed it and removed the fish's heart, liver and gall. Tobias later used these fish-guts to exorcise the demon that had cursed his wife and to restore his father's sight. The artist has pushed the protagonists into the lower left foreground, thus giving prominence to the landscape. | Subjects: | religion (Tobias and the archangel Raphael) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Poelenburgh, Cornelis van (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1594 or 1595-1667) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8582... | Go to resource |
