Description: | William Hamilton, second Duke of Hamilton (1616-1651), succeeded to the title on the execution of his brother James in 1649, and was invested with the Garter. He had been created Earl of Lanark in 1639, and Secretary of State for Scotland in 1640. He went with Charles II into exile at The Hague, returning with him in 1650, but not being allowed to remain with the King he was sent to the Isle of Arran while he remained until he was again permitted to go to Court. The original work was painted in The Hague, after Hamilton's nomination as Knight of the Garter on 12 January 1650, and before his departure for Scotland with Charles II in June of that year. The design is based on a portrait of Charles I by Van Dyck, of which the original may then have been in the The Hague (see Barnes, 2004, p. 475). | Subjects: | portrait (Hamilton William) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Hanneman, Adriaen (Dutch painter, ca.1601-1671) Æ After Previously attributed to Dobson, William (English painter, 1611-1646) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8587... | Go to resource |
