Description: | Charles (1550-1574), second son of Henri II of France and Catherine de Medici, succeeded to the French crown, aged 10, in 1560. If the date 1569 is accurate, then Charles would have been about nineteen years old when this work was painted. The painting was identified as Charles IX by Van der Doort, while it was in the collection of Charles I. Sometime during the next century and a half, the names of both sitter and artist were lost, the work turning up in the collection of William Beckford as a portrait of Charles's younger brother, the Duc d'Alençon, by Zuccaro. If the date of the painting is accepted, then the Duc would have been around fifteen years old when the portrait was painted: this identification seems unlikely given the apparent maturity of the sitter. | Subjects: | portrait (Charles IX of France) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Clouet, François (French draftsman, painter, and portraitist, ca. 1516-1572) Æ Previously attributed to Zuccaro, Federico (Italian painter and draftsman, ca. 1541-1609) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8589... | Go to resource |
