Description: | Portrait of a Knight of St John, in eighteenth-century dress. Knights in the eighteenth century were allowed to dress according to fashion, so long as the signs of their membership to the order were clearly displayed, abandoning the traditional armour or black mantle previously thought appropriate to a portrait. The style of the portraiture, dress and wig in this painting date it to the time of Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc, Grand Master of the Order 1775-1797. | Subjects: | portrait (Knight of St John) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Maltese School Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8606... | Go to resource |
