Description: | Although very different in style, the composition of this painting is based on Titian's interpretation of the same subject. In the centre the Virgin Mary mourns over her dead son, Jesus, whose body is loosely draped in a linen shroud as he is lowered into the sarcophagus. Supporting his upper body is Joseph of Arimathea, in whose unused tomb Jesus was to be buried, and at his feet is Nicodemus who brought the embalming ointments. Behind, the disciple John stands by the weeping Virgin and Mary Magdalene clasps her hands together, both in grief and as an allusion to prayer. | Subjects: | religion (Entombment of Christ) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Titian (Italian painter and draftsman, ca. 1488-1576) Æ After Attributed to Flemish School | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8607... | Go to resource |
