Description: | Signed: yes Description: This seventeenth-century Dutch interior painting is typical of the work of painter Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam (about 1622-about 1669). Based in Leiden, Van Brekelenkam specialised in unidealised interior scenes of everyday life. A maid, who looks at the viewer, cleans pots next to two small children, one of whom sits on a stool, playing a recorder. In the dimly-lit room we can see a spinning wheel and a basket of dishes, indicating the maid's workload. A map of the Netherlands on the wall was a common motif in paintings of Dutch interiors at this time, symbolising national pride. | Subjects: | figure; everyday life; interior | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Brekelenkam, Quiringh van (Dutch painter, after 1622-1669 or after) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8615... | Go to resource |
