Description: | This striking portrait of Sydney Milner-Gibson, a granddaughter of the Reverend Sir John Gery Cullum, 8th Bt, was commissioned by the sitter's half-brother Thomas Bowles. Bowles was a close friend of the Tissot and provided lodging for the artist when he first moved to London following the fall of the Paris Commune in 1871. Tissot was also a friend and contemporary of the American artist James Abott McNeill Whistler. His artistic affinity with Whistler can be noted in the informal yet luxurious qualities of his society portraits, of which this painting, one of the artist's first English works, is fine example. | Subjects: | Sydney Isabella) portrait (Milner-Gibson | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Tissot, James (French painter and printmaker, 1836-1902) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8617... | Go to resource |
