Description: | In this painting Joseph flees the outstretched arms of his master's wife, who reclines semi-nude on a bed. Potiphar's wife wrongly accused Joseph of rape, resulting in his condemnation to prison. A curtain draped across the background is pulled back to reveal an architectural scene and sky. The theme is taken from Genesis 39.11-18. This painting has previously been attributed to Luca Giordano, a Neapolitan painter and draftsman active Italy and Spain. While it is very similar to Giordano's work, the treatment of the figures does not merit an attribution to him. | Subjects: | religion (Joseph and Potiphar's wife) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Giordano, Luca (Italian painter, 1634-1705, active in Italy and Spain) Æ Attributed to circle of Attributed to Italian (Neapolitan) School Previously attributed to Italian School | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8629... | Go to resource |
