Description: | A figure in white wearing a helmet, probably representing religion or truth, banishes a figure in dark costume, probably heresy or darkness from an altar. The figure in white holds a banner inscribed Umbrat Fugat Veritas, which translates as Truth puts shade to flight.' Two putti accompany the scene, carrying a book, chalice and cross. A lamb looks up at the altar. The figures are vaguely reminiscent of Francesco Solimena (1657 - 1747). The hand is not recognisable and is probably a fringe artist working in southern Italy at the end of the seventeenth to beginning of the eighteenth century. | Subjects: | allegory; religion | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Solimena, Francesco (Italian painter and draftsman, 1657-1747) Æ Attributed to school of Previously attributed to Italian (Neapolitan) School | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8630... | Go to resource |
