Description: | King James VI (of Scotland) and I (of England) is depicted half-length, turning to the right, against a plain brown background. The rich clothes are meticulously rendered: he is wearing an embroidered black coat over a costume decorated with gold braid and jewelled buttons down the front. The bearded, aged face with sunken eyes and the hat jewel recall portraits of James by Daniel Mytens, who came to England about 1618, and who painted portraits of James I and of his son Charles I. However, certain weak areas (for example the collar around his neck appears unfinished) suggest that this is not an original by Mytens. | Subjects: | portrait (James VI and I) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Mytens, Daniel, I (Dutch painter, ca.1590-before 1648) Æ Attributed to manner of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8672... | Go to resource |
