Description: | The costume and jewels, identified as being in Spanish settings, mark this as a portrait of a sixteenth century woman of very high status. Her red, gold and silver brocade dress is decorated with pearls, gold sleeves and a high white lace ruff. She wears an elaborate gold, jewelled necklace from which hangs a single, tear-drop shaped pearl. Around her shoulders is a marten's fur. This portrait is currently thought to show Elizabeth Fitzgerald (1528?-1589), third wife of Edward, Lord Clinton, High Admiral of the Fleet under Elizabeth I. The authorship of the portrait is still under debate but it appears to be by a Netherlandish artist, possibly Lucas de Heere, who worked in England between 1570 and 1577 and who had connections with Lord Clinton. | Subjects: | Fitzgerald Lady Clinton (?)) portrait (female Elizabeth | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Heere, Lucas de (early Netherlandish painter and poet, 1534-1584) Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to Mor, Antonis (North Netherlandish painter, born 1512-1516, died ca. 1576) Previously attributed to Zuccaro, Federico (Italian painter and draftsman, ca. 1541-1609) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8675... | Go to resource |
