Description: | Soest is traditionally stated to have come from Soest in Westphalia but was almost certainly Dutch by birth and training. He travelled to England in the late 1640s where he remained, and died in London in 1681. His use of colour is highly individual; here the bright red-orange of the fruit is contrasted with the girl's blue satin sash. Soest also paid great attention to hands, which do much to give movement and character to his portraits. The hands of the young girl in this portrait are perfectly animated and certainly are key features of the image. One picks fruit from a high branch and the other gently places fruit in the basket below. | Subjects: | portrait (female) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Soest, Gerard (Dutch painter in England, ca.1600-1681) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8683... | Go to resource |
