Description: | This small painting is a bozzetto, meaning a sketch, which were often used by Italian artists to try out ideas or record a composition for larger projects. This work relates to an altarpiece painted by Carlo Innocenzo Carlone for a church in Como, North Italy, called the Basilica di San Fedele, made about 1765-1767. This very successful fresco artist trained in Venice before working in Austria and Germany. He also painted extensively in Northern Italy. The sketch shows his typical use of acid colours and rippling fabric in order to emphasise the drama and movement of the scene. | Subjects: | religion (Christ Crowned with Thorns) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Carlone, Carlo Innocenzo (Italian painter, 1686-1775) Æ Previously attributed to Italian School | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8687... | Go to resource |
