Description: | Nicholas Pierre Loir (1624-1679) trained with the French artists Simon Vouet and Sebastian Bourdon before travelling to Rome in 1647. There he met Nicolas Poussin whose work greatly influenced him. This painting is reminiscent of Poussin's paintings of the Holy Family composed using strict geometrical shapes and calm almost statue-like figures. When he returned to Paris, Loir achieved fame through painting altarpieces and smaller works for Parisian collectors. Although this painting is of a religious subject, Jesus' immediate family, such small scale paintings were displayed in private galleries and were admired for their painterly qualities as well as devotional significance. | Subjects: | St John the Baptist) religion (Holy Family | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Loir, Nicolas Pierre (French painter and engraver, 1624-1679) Æ Attributed to circle of Attributed to Loir, Nicolas Pierre (French painter and engraver, 1624-1679) Previously attributed to circle of Tassel, Jean (French painter, 1608-1667) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8690... | Go to resource |
