Description: | This painting is generally considered to be a studio copy of the painting by Ribera in the Chiesa dei Girolamini, Naples. The half-length composition and the focus of Christ's body relate the original to a series of paintings of apostles, philosophers and allegories of the senses which Ribera made around 1616-17. Originally from Spain, Ribera came to Italy around 1611 and gained success working in Rome and Naples where he developed dramatic light effects, influenced by Caravaggio's paintings. By the 1640s, the employees of his well-established workshop were producing many copies of his works. | Subjects: | religion ( Flagellation); figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ribera, Jusepe de (Spanish painter and printmaker, baptized in 1591, died 1652, active in Italy) Æ Attributed to studio of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8690... | Go to resource |
