Description: | St Catherine of Alexandria was a noblewoman who was saved from death by spiked wheel, the attribute shown here. She also holds a palm, referring to her martyrdom by beheading. The work is close in style to the Neapolitans Massimo Stanzione (1585-1656) and Francesco Guarino (1611-1654), who produced a series of paintings showing female saints and heroines, sometimes looking slyly out at the viewer. It has been suggested that the work may be a portrait of a lady in the saint's guise. This practice was not uncommon, and Catherine was a popular saint for the aristocracy owing to her status. | Subjects: | religion (St Catherine of Alexandra); portrait(?) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Guarino, Francesco (Italian painter, 1611-1654) Æ Attributed to manner of Attributed to manner of Stanzione, Massimo (Italian painter, 1585-1656) Previously attributed to Lippi, Lorenzo (Italian painter and poet, 1606-1665) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8690... | Go to resource |
