Description: | In the 4th century it became an article of faith that Christ descended into Hell, where he overcame Satan and liberated the souls of Adam and Eve and the Old Testament patriarchs and prophets who, because they had lived in an age without the Christian sacraments, were relegated to a lower place until Christ should come to redeem them. In this painting Christ, showing the wounds of the Crucifixion, carries the banner of the Resurrection, a red cross on a white background. Behind him are Adam and Eve. Francken was primarily a figure painter who frequently collaborated with other artists who carried out the landscapes and other features. In this instance the composition follows closely a composition by Pieter Brueghel the Younger; there is an almost identical work attributed to Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678) in an English private collection (illustrated in Ertz, Klaus Jan Brueghel der Jungere, 1984, p.25). Brueghel's image is itself thought to be derived from earlier works by his father depicting the Last Judgement.
