Description: | St Francis is shown against a dark background receiving the stigmata. The dark surroundings of the landscape almost envelope the figure of the saint. The artist has demonstrated his great ability to use chiaroscuro (extreme contrasts of light and dark) to highlight the form of the figure and direct the eye to the miracle of St Francis receiving the stigmata. This use of chiaroscuro became highly popular in Naples during the first half of the seventeenth century through the influence of Ribera. The artist of this painting may be closely associated with Ribera. | Subjects: | religion (St Francis); figure; landscape | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ribera, Jusepe de (Spanish painter and printmaker, baptized in 1591, died 1652, active in Italy) Æ Attributed to circle of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8710... | Go to resource |
