Description: | This small picture and its pendant, Old Woman Reading (FAG 465), are good examples of a specific type of Dutch painting. Pictures of older men, and particularly older women, were a popular sub-genre, and were treated by many artists. While paintings of this subject can be considered as having a humorous element, they apparently display great affection and respect for the elderly. While the man and woman's old-fashioned clothes and careful scrutiny of their respective quill and book offer a wry observation on the passing of youthful exertions, they also bespeak a valued depth of wisdom and experience. | Subjects: | everyday life | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Brekelenkam, Quiringh van (Dutch painter, after 1622-1669 or after) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8716... | Go to resource |
