Description: | This painting, executed in the style of Murillo, portrays a popular subject at the time in Spain, La Divina Pastora' (The Divine Shepherdess or Mother of the Good Shepherd), whose origins were in Seville. The Virgin is surrounded by sheep holding a rose in her left hand with cherubs on top looking down at her. There is an identical eighteenth-century copy of this work by Alonso Miguel de Tovar (or Tobar'). The cherubs resemble particularly those in Murillo's The Christ Asleep on the Cross (Sheffield) and The Infant St John (Boughton House, Kettering), and reflect Murillo's liking for movement. The iconography complies with seventeenth-century religious sensibility and the taste for popular devotional images in Spain. The painter emphasises the gentle and tender nature of the Virgin touching the lamp.
