Description: | This small Madonna and Child may have been made for private devotion. Mary is depicted with the infant on her lap, with the young John the Baptist, and Saints Cecilia and Mary Magdalene. The elongated appearance of the figures suggests that the painter was influenced by the Mannerist style of the mid-sixteenth century. However, the unusual combination of iconographical details, with Christ holding a ring signifying a mystic marriage, indicates that the picture may not be what it seems. It is possible that it was produced in the nineteenth-century to satisfy the huge demand for Renaissance painting at that time. | Subjects: | figure; religion (Virgin and Child; saint; St Catherine?) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Italian School Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8750... | Go to resource |
