Description: | The subject of this painting is one of the many naval engagements that occurred between the Spanish and Dutch fleets in the late sixteenth century. The canvas is attributed to the Flemish painter Andries van Eertvelt, who is widely regarded as the first great painter of marine subjects and who often depicted sea battles. Van Eertvelt spent many years painting in the north Italian port of Genoa. He later returned to his native Antwerp, where he had pupils and where his portrait was painted by his contemporary, Anthony Van Dyck. Van Eertvelt's paintings were highly prized by collectors as far distant as Seville and Lisbon. | Subjects: | marine; history (naval battle between Dutch and Spanish); military and war | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Eertvelt, Andries van (Flemish painter, 1590-1652) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8751... | Go to resource |
