Description: | In a domestic interior, the Virgin kneels before a prie-dieu, left. She wears long mid-blue robes edged with gold. Her left hand holds the book she has been reading, her right is held up across her body to acknowledge the Angel Gabriel, who appears at the right. The Virgin has long red tresses; her eyes are downcast, and her head is inclined towards the Angel. Gabriel, standing, is dressed in a long white robe, with a green cope, lined in red, and joined at the breastbone with a large oval clasp of a yellow metal. The Angel raises his left hand in a gesture of greeting; in his right, he holds forward a single stem of flowering lilies. A three-legged chair is against the wall behind the figures. A red canopied bed, on an elaborately-patterned floor, is behind the Virgin on the left. A garden, with a town square with figures beyond, is visible through a window on the right. | Subjects: | religion (Annunciation) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Weyden, Rogier van der (Flemish painter, ca. 1399-1464) Æ Attributed to school of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8753... | Go to resource |
