Description: | Signed: yes Description: Half-length portrait of a man with his head turned slightly to the right. He has an ample brown periwig, lace scarf with tassels and lace edging to white undersleeves. He has a broad richly embroidered yellow belt over right shoulder. He also wears a massive gold chain of five strands with a gold medal hanging from his neck. In his right hand he holds a long pistol with the butt resting against his leg. In left background is a vignette of two fighting ships. Captain Willem van der Zaen (or Zaan) (1621-1669), was given a gold medal and chain by the Dutch Admiralty in 1661; this survives, and has the same highly-distinctive five-fold chain as that worn by this sitter. | Subjects: | portrait (Captain Willem van der Zaen?) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Helst, Bartholomeus van der (Dutch painter, 1613-1670) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8774... | Go to resource |
