Description: | The Madonna and Child enthroned with St Jerome and St John the Baptist has been tentatively attributed to Pietro de Marescalchi (c.1503-1589), after long being attributed to the Antwerp painter Gaspar de Crayer (1584-1669). Marescalchi came from Feltre, a small town in the Veneto region, his work influenced by his compatriot Lorenzo Luzzo but also, more importantly, by Jacopo Bassano. The poor condition of the Glasgow painting with its abraded paint layer and therefore loss of detail, makes an assessment based on stylistic correspondences difficult. The composition, and the gestures and movement of the figures, place the work in the late 16th century, and indeed possibly in Marescalchi's circle, if not in the Veneto area. | Subjects: | religion (Virgin and Child) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Crayer, Gaspar de (Flemish painter, 1584-1669) Æ Previously attributed to manner of Marescalchi, Pietro (Italian painter, 1522-1589) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8792... | Go to resource |
