Description: | This scene taken from Book VIII of Virgil's Aeneid is now firmly attributed (Bowron & Rishel, 2000) to the Roman painter Giuseppe Ghezzi (1634-1721) after a former attribution to his son Pier Leone. Ghezzi moved to Rome in 1651 where in 1671 he became a notary. Only one year later he left his legal career behind and fully dedicated himself to painting. In 1674 his son Pier Leone is born and Giuseppe gets elected permanent secretary of the St Luke Academy, a post he will occupy until 1718. Ghezzi's work shows a strong affinity with late Baroque composition, a strong sense of chiaroscuro (extreme contrasts of light and dark), and effective use of pronounced brushwork. His interpretation of Venus giving Arms to Aeneas makes full use of the details in the story to organise the scene in an innovative and original way. | Subjects: | mythology (Venus and Aeneas); figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ghezzi, Giuseppe (Italian painter and illustrator, 1634-1721) Æ Attributed to manner of Previously attributed to manner of Ghezzi, Pier Leone (Italian painter, 1674-1755) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8793... | Go to resource |
