Description: | St Joseph and the Infant Jesus is a copy of Saint Joseph supporting the Standing Infant Christ, attributed to Bartolomé Estebán Murillo (1617-1682), and today at the Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, Florida (42 3/4 x 33 3/4 inch, oil on canvas). Murillo's devotional paintings from his later career, with representations of just a few figures such as the Virgin and Child, the Infant Christ and St John, were extremely popular and were copied many times. The theme of St Joseph and the Infant Christ appears frequently in Murillo's work, e.g. Joseph and the Sleeping Christ Child, (about 1668-1675, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, St Louis, USA); St Joseph leading the Christ Child, (about 1670-1675, Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg), all dated in the last part of his career. | Subjects: | religion (St Joseph Infant Christ) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Murillo, Bartolomé Estebán (Spanish painter and draftsman, 1618-1682) Æ Attributed to after Previously attributed to manner of Tovar, Alonso Miguel de (Spanish painter, 1678-1758) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8800... | Go to resource |
