Description: | Influences from Ribera in the figure of Christ, Rubens in the grouping of the disciples and Guercino, all come together in this work tentatively attributed to Mattia Preti (1613-1699). After stays in Rome, and possibly Spain and Flanders, Preti arrived in Naples in 1656 where he becomes the leading artist and created a style based on Caravaggio's application of light, subtle use of shadows combined with a great variety of colour. From 1659 until his death he worked in Malta. Preti produced a huge number of works, replicas, variations and studio productions involving his many assistants, which make a accurate assessment of his oeuvre difficult. The composition of Christ's charge to St Peter seems awkward which may be due to several hands at work. | Subjects: | religion (Christ's Charge to Peter) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Preti, Mattia (Italian painter, 1613-1699) and studio Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8804... | Go to resource |
