Description: | Christ hands over the keys to heaven to St Peter, his chief disciple who will build his Church. The composition, figures, gestures and drapery are reminiscent of Nicholas Poussin (1594-1665) to whom the painting was originally ascribed. Its present attribution to the Milanese painter Giovanni Ghisolfi (1623-1683) seems questionable. Ghisolfi, who moved to Rome in 1650 where he studied Pietro Da Cortona's work and frequented Salvator Rosa's studio, painted landscapes with a strong emphasis on architecture and ancient ruins. This scene, with its focus on the figure group, sits uneasily within Ghisolfi's oeuvre, and should therefore for now be described as 17th century Roman. | Subjects: | religion (Christ's Charge to Peter); figure; landscape | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ghisolfi, Giovanni (Italian artist, ca. 1623-1683) Æ Attributed to manner of Previously attributed to Poussin, Nicolas (French painter and draftsman, 1594-1665, active in Italy) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8804... | Go to resource |
