Description: | This oil sketch shows Hagar with her son Ishmael, dying of thirst after being chased away by Abraham. An angel appears and points out where she will find a well and promises her that Ishmael will found a great nation. Various authors have been suggested for this work, e.g. Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734) and Gaspare Diziani (1689-1767). When bequeathed to the Glasgow Museums, it was attributed to Tiepolo. However the painting's poor condition, combined with its sketchy character, makes an accurate attribution difficult. This could be a sketch for another composition, which has not so far been identified. Yet its technique does not seem spontaneous and further research is necessary to when the work was painted. | Subjects: | Ishmael Angel); figure religion (Hagar | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Tiepolo, Giovanni Battista (Italian painter and draftsman, 1696-1770) Æ Attributed to Attributed to manner of Diziani, Gaspare (Italian painter, 1689-1767) Previously attributed to manner of Ricci, Sebastiano (Italian painter and draftsman, 1659-1734) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8808... | Go to resource |
