Description: | This scene represents the moment Elijah meets the widow of Zarephath with her son while she is collecting wood to prepare them their last meal. Elijah asks her to bring him some water and make him a small cake. She has hardly any food left but Elijah reassures her: 'For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: the jar of meal will not be emptied and the oil in the jug will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth' (1 Kings 17: 13-16). This small composition has had various late 17th century-early 18th century attributions, e.g. Luca Giordano, Sebastiano Ricci. However, its style is more reminiscent of French Baroque painting and in particular of Simon Vouet. Vouet spent 14 years in Italy (1613-1627), mainly in Rome. Although not by Vouet himself, Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath may be ascribed to his circle or followers. | Subjects: | religion (Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath); figure | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Giordano, Luca (Italian painter, 1634-1705, active in Italy and Spain) Æ Attributed to manner of Previously attributed to Ricci, Sebastiano (Italian painter and draftsman, 1659-1734) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8809... | Go to resource |
