Description: | This small copper panel's most recent attribution to Francesco Trevisani (1656-1746) is based on the presumed originality of the inscription or signature on the back: Cve Trev.s Ro. 1740' which has been interpreted as 'Cavaliere Trevisani, Roma 1740'. However, the date seems to have been changed from 1748 into 1740. As Trevisani died in 1746, an attribution on the basis of the inscription seems weak. Trevisani who from 1681 worked in Rome made many small devotional pictures, often on a copper support. The Angel and Christ in Trevisani's Dead Christ borne by Angels (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna,) bear some likeness to the figures in the small Glasgow painting. However, the composition is also reminiscent of earlier works such as the Angel and Christ in Paolo Veronese's Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane (Brera Pinacoteca, Milan), and is close to two drawings by Palma il Giovane (dated c. 1600, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Albertina, Vienna). Technical research may support a more accurate date and evaluate the present attribution. | Subjects: | figure religion (Agony in the Garden) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Trevisani, Francesco (Italian painter, 1656-1746) Æ Attributed to manner of Previously attributed to manner of Carracci, Annibale (Italian painter, 1560-1609) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8816... | Go to resource |
