Description: | This Baroque Madonna, once attributed to Carlo Maratti, is now thought to be by one of the leading painters in Baroque Naples, Francesco Solimena. The Virgin is gently inclined towards the Child, while, in a strange contrast, the Child itself is looking with an immobile and serious face towards the spectator. The goldfinch he is holding was a favourite children's pet for many centuries, but it is also a symbol of Christ's destiny, for the goldfinch acquired its red spot when it flew down and drew a thorn from Jesus's brow on his way to Calvary. | Subjects: | figure; religion (Virgin and Child) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Solimena, Francesco (Italian painter and draftsman, 1657-1747) Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to Maratti, Carlo (Italian painter, 1625-1713) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8816... | Go to resource |
