Description: | Signed: yes Description: Bartolomeo Montagna was a younger contemporary of Giovanni Bellini. He was born about 1450 and died in Vicenza in 1523. His enthroned Madonna, praying to the Child, is located before a shield in quite a rough setting with a few flowering plants capable of surviving in the gaps between the steps of the rocky landscape. The two saints, James and, most probably, Philip, are standing beside her. Although there is more statuary in the composition, these figures clearly evoke Giovanni Bellini's type of the 'Sacra conversazione', a silent meeting of saints with the Madonna and Child at their centre. | Subjects: | St James figure; religion (Virgin and Child St Philip[?]) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Montagna, Bartolomeo (Italian painter, ca.1450-1523) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8820... | Go to resource |
