Description: | In 1970 Buchanan attributed this work to Neapolitan Baroque painter Luca Giordano (1632-1705). Giordano worked in Naples, Venice, Florence and Madrid. He probably trained with the Spanish painter Jusepe De Ribera, but from the 1650s he abandoned Ribera's dark and dramatic tonality and, influenced by the Roman Baroque and Pietro da Cortona in particular, started using a much lighter and more colourful palette. He was nicknamed Proteus for his ability to work in many different styles. E.g. the figure of St Catherine in the Holy Family with St Catherine, is reminiscent of the same saint in Titian's The Virgin and Child with the infant St John and a Female Saint or Donor (National Gallery, London). Similar compositions can be found in Palma il Vecchio's work with architecture on the right and a landscape view on left. | Subjects: | religion ( St Catherine) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Giordano, Luca (Italian painter, 1634-1705, active in Italy and Spain) Æ Attributed to manner of Previously attributed to manner of Cortona, Pietro da (Italian draftsman and painter, 1596-1669) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8824... | Go to resource |
