Description: | Van Miereveld studied under the Utrecht painter Anthonie Blockandt, later returning to Delft where he established himself as a successful portrait painter. He received commissions from Prince Maurice and other members of the court, although his popularity waned in later life. The sitter has been identified as Columbus, despite no other portrait of the navigator depicting him with a beard. Other representations, including the portrait by Sebastiano del Piombo (1519) and Lorenzo Lotto (1512), also show him with a fuller face. | Subjects: | portrait | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Miereveld, Michiel Jansz. van (Dutch painter, 1567-1641) Æ Attributed to circle of | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8831... | Go to resource |
