Description: | Signed: yes Description: Like many Dutch and Belgian artists of his time, Le Roy was heavily influenced by the works of his seventeenth-century Netherlandish predecessors. The composition, the interior, the costume and the general subject itself allude to the work of earlier artists such as Jan Steen and Pieter de Hooch. The tavern interior was a popular theme, offering a lively context and a variety of characters on which to base any social commentary. In contrast to the rowdy behaviour often featured in the early genre scenes, however, the figures in Leroy's painting are dignified and relaxed as they listen intently to the music. | Subjects: | figure; everyday life; animal (dog); interior | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Le Roy, Joseph Anne Jules (Belgian artist, 1812-1860) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8839... | Go to resource |
