Description: | Signed: yes Description: This painting is one of many copies after a monumental work by Bartholomeus van der Helst, now at the Rijksmuseum. Essentially a group portrait of the Guild of St George militia, it also commemorates an important event in Dutch history - the signing of the Treaty of Münster in 1648 and the end of the Eighty Years' War against Spain. Calisch's painting is a fraction of the size of Van der Helst's, which measures 5.5 metres across. The copy shows the full height of the composition, however, in contrast to the original canvas which has at some point been cropped. | Subjects: | 1848); history (signing of the Treaty of Münster in 1648) portrait (members of the Amsterdam Civic Guard | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Calisch, Moritz (Dutch artist, 1819-1870) Æ After Helst, Bartholomeus van der (Dutch painter, 1613-1670) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8842... | Go to resource |
