Description: | Signed: yes Description: Wouwerman was an adept painter and his work was highly popular both during and after his lifetime. He particularly enjoyed depicting figures on horseback and painted a number of cavalry battle scenes as well as pictures such as this. The horse fair, where traders who were often gypsies came to sell their livestock, offered a range of characters and lively activity with which to animate the scene. Although the painting is rather small, Wouwerman's fine technique allowed for considerable detail. The grouping around the refined gentlemen in the foreground adds compositional order to the chaotic bustle behind. | Subjects: | dog); landscape; everyday life figure; animal (horse | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Wouwerman, Philips (Dutch painter, 1619-1668) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8842... | Go to resource |
