Description: | Signed: yes Description: Jan Steen's satirical perspective creates a moral contrast between these obese characters gorging themselves to excess and the emaciated figures in The Lean Kitchen scraping together their meagre rations. The copious amounts of meat and cheese hanging from the ceiling and the numerous pots, dishes and flasks adorning the room indicate that their gluttonous feasting is habitual. Steen's moralising caricatures brought him much success in a protestant Dutch society which was highly self-conscious of its own prosperity. His works were not simply admired for their narrative, however, but also for the painterly skill and observation with which he expressed it. | Subjects: | dog) everyday life; interior; figure; animal (cat | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Steen, Jan (Dutch painter, 1626-1679) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8843... | Go to resource |
