Description: | Signed: yes Description: Encouraged as a student to study both the works of the Old Masters and the natural landscape, Schelfhout's paintings demonstrate an articulate variety of atmospheric effects and observational detail. He was particularly renowned for his winter scenes. In this work the subtle tones of the sky, the long shadows and crisp ice recreate the impression of a cold winter's evening. It was not uncommon for specialists in different genres of painting to collaborate on single works. In this case the figures were painted by the Belgian artist Joseph Moerenhout, adding a warming sense of activity to the frozen landscape. | Subjects: | dogs landscape; figure; animal (horses dead game) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Schelfhout, Andreas (Dutch painter,1787-1870) Æ Moerenhout, Josephus Jodocus (Belgian painter 1801-1875) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8846... | Go to resource |
