Description: | This is the earlier of two oval portraits in the collection at Chelmsford of Juliana Margaretta Waltersdorff (1769-1819), shown here in her late teens wearing a fashionable reddish shawl and headband. Juliana Margaretta married Sir Cornelius Hendrickson Kortright (1763/64-1818) in the early 1790s, and this painting may have been commissioned to celebrate the couple's engagement. After several years in the West Indies, the pair travelled to England, no doubt with this picture among their possessions, and settled at Hylands House near Chelmsford, where they lived until 1814. The painting remained with the Kortright family in East Anglia until 2001, when it was acquired by Chelmsford Museum. The artist, Jens Juel, was at the height of his career when this portrait was commissioned. Having first studied in Hamburg (then under Danish sovereignty), and at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, he had spent the best part of a decade travelling and working in the artistic capitals of Europe before returning to Copenhagen in 1780. In the same year he was appointed painter to the Danish court and soon became a leading figure in the Danish academy and a celebrated society portraitist. Over the next twenty years he painted several portraits for the Waltersdorff and Kortright families. | Subjects: | Mrs Cornelius) Juliana Margaretta; Kortright portrait (Waltersdorff | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Juel, Jens (Danish painter, 1745-1802) Æ Attributed to | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8847... | Go to resource |
