Description: | Saint Barbara holds a martyr's palm and is set before her attribute of a tower. The figural type, dress and gesture closely resemble figures in Guido Reni's paintings. Saint Barbara appears in a contemporary dress which has been draped around her body to create an impression of classical robes. The saint elegantly outstretches her arms as she raises her eyes in contemplation, a gesture typical of Counter Reformation art in Italy at the turn of the seventeenth century. | Subjects: | figure; religion (St Barbara); buildings and gardens (tower) | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Reni, Guido (Italian painter and draftsman, 1575-1642) Æ Attributed to school of Previously attributed to circle of Domenichino (Italian painter and draftsman, 1581-1641) Previously attributed to after Domenichino (Italian painter and draftsman, 1581-1641) Previously attributed to Italian (Venetian) School | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8848... | Go to resource |
