Description: | The finely painted face in this portrait, in contrast to the sketchy background, suggests a collaboration between master and studio, a technique often employed by busy artists like Lely, a very successful portrait painter. The features of the sitter bear a marked resemblance to Barbara Villiers, a spirited and romantic woman who became the mistress of Charles II. During the 1660s, Lely painted many portraits of Barbara which were much copied. These portraits helped her establish a reputation as a great court beauty. They also contained imagery which challenged the position of Charles' queen, Catherine of Braganza. | Subjects: | Barbara 1640-1709) portrait (lady probably Villiers Duchess of Cleveland | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Lely, Peter (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1618-1680, active in England) and studio Æ Attributed to Previously attributed to Lely, Peter (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1618-1680, active in England) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8853... | Go to resource |
