Description: | This engaging portrait is believed to show Catharine Sedley. Catharine was known for her wit rather than her beauty. She obtained a position at court as a maid of honour, and then became the mistress of the future king James II. When he was made monarch, James broke off the affair as a moral example to the court. He did however set Catharine up in her own house, and later made her the Countess of Dorchester. The painting is executed in a style similar to that of Peter Lely, a very fashionable Dutch painter who worked at the English court. | Subjects: | Countess of Dorchester Catharine 1657-1717) portrait (Sedley | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Lely, Peter (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1618-1680, active in England) Æ Attributed to studio of Previously attributed to Kneller, Godfrey (English painter, 1646-1723) Previously attributed to Lely, Peter (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1618-1680, active in England) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8853... | Go to resource |
