Description: | This painting is an early copy of a work attributed to Jacopo da Pontormo, an extremely original artist whose extraordinary colour palette is evident in this work. He worked in Florence and Rome in the early sixteenth century. At this time, such small scale images of the Virgin and Child were popular household devotional objects and acted as exemplas for mothers and children. The work was once owned by the famous art historian, Sir Kenneth Clark, who attributed the work to the Florentine Mannerist, Rosso Fiorentino. Later research has proved this attribution to be erroneous. | Subjects: | Christ Child) religion (Virgin Mary | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Pontormo (Italian painter and draftsman, 1494-1557) Æ After Previously attributed to Rosso Fiorentino (Italian draftsman and painter, 1494-1540, active in France) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8853... | Go to resource |
