Description: | Van Ostade was born and worked in Haarlem. He was a pupil of Frans Hals around 1627, at the same time as Adriaen Bouwer. Hals's influence can be seen in his work. He was a member of the St Luke's Guild in Haarlem by 1634. Ostade is best known for his scenes of peasant life which he not only painted in oil, but produced in watercolour and etchings. Amongst his pupils were his younger brother Isack, Cornelis Bega, Jan Steen, and his close imitator Cornelis Dusart. This circular panel dates from the period 1650-70 when the artist's work shows an increasing interest in open-air scenes, his scenes being more restful than his earlier works and his figures truer to life. His use of colour and light becomes more harmonious than in his earlier works. Ostade painted only a handful of these circular paintings. | Subjects: | animal (dog); figure; everyday life | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Ostade, Adriaen van (Dutch draftsman and painter, 1610-1685) Æ | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8862... | Go to resource |
