Description: | The original painting by van Mieris is in the collection of the Mauritshuis, Holland. The Cannon Hall painting is a good replica, painted at the time of the original and is likely to have come from the artist's studio. From the Leiden School, van Mieris was a student of Gerard Dou, who had been trained by Rembrandt but had in turn developed his own distinct style, adopting both a smaller scale and lighter palette. The precise handling of every minute detail is known as fijnschilderij. The subject matter is typical of van Mieris' work and was popular all over the country in the late 1650s and early 1660s. A number of symbols used in the painting turns the work from a simple observation of a boy at play. Children blowing bubbles are often a symbol of the transience of human life; a sunflower represents loyalty' as it always grows towards the sun and follows its course, even when a grown plant. | Subjects: | allegory (vanitas loyalty); animal (dog); figure; everyday life; still life | Source: | Vads | Creator: | Artist: Mieris, Frans van (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1635-1681) Æ Attributed to studio of Previously attributed to Mieris, Frans van (Dutch painter and draftsman, 1635-1681) | Identifier: | http://www.vads.ac.uk/large.php?uid=8863... | Go to resource |
